Astrocartography: your planets, drawn across the Earth.

At the minute you were born, every planet was rising somewhere, setting somewhere and standing overhead somewhere else. This free astrocartography map draws those places as lines across the world, then names the cities each one passes.

How the map is drawn

Four lines for every planet.

Each planet gets the same four lines, named after the four angles of a birth chart. Together they show where on Earth that planet would have sat exactly on the horizon or the meridian at your birth.

MC

Midheaven line

Where the planet stood directly overhead, at the highest point of its arc. Astrologers tie it to vocation, reputation and the version of you that other people see at work.

IC

IC line

The opposite meridian, where the planet sat directly beneath your feet. It is read through home, family, roots and the private life no one else sees.

AC

Ascendant line

Where the planet was rising over the eastern horizon. It is linked to your body, your first impressions and how you carry yourself in a new place.

DC

Descendant line

Where the planet was setting in the west. It is read through partnerships, close collaborators and the people you tend to meet.

Planet by planet

What each planet line tends to symbolize.

These are the traditional associations. They describe a tone a place may take on for you, not events that will happen there.

  • Sun lines

Visibility, vitality and purpose. Sun lines are often described as places where you feel more like yourself, and more noticed.

  • Moon lines

Comfort, memory and belonging. Moon lines are linked to feeling at home, and to moods that run closer to the surface.

  • Mercury lines

Talk, study, trade and travel. Mercury lines are associated with busy minds, new contacts and learning.

  • Venus lines

Pleasure, beauty and affection. Venus lines are the ones people look up first: places linked to ease, art and warmth.

  • Mars lines

Drive, courage and heat. Mars lines can feel energising or combative; many astrologers read them as places to work hard rather than rest.

  • Jupiter lines

Growth, generosity and luck in the old sense of opportunity. Jupiter lines are associated with optimism and wider horizons.

  • Saturn lines

Structure, effort and time. Saturn lines are linked to responsibility and slow, serious work, which some people find steadying and others heavy.

  • Uranus lines

Change and independence. Uranus lines are associated with breaks from routine, sudden turns and a taste for freedom.

  • Neptune lines

Imagination and longing. Neptune lines are linked to inspiration, spirituality and blurred boundaries, for better and worse.

  • Pluto lines

Depth, power and transformation. Pluto lines are read as intense places that tend to bring hidden things to the surface.

Reading the map

How to read your astrocartography map.

  1. I

    Start with your birthplace

The ember dot marks where you were born. Lines that pass close to it describe planets that were already angular in your birth chart.

  2. II

Follow one planet at a time

Tap a planet in the legend to bring its four lines forward. Its Midheaven and IC run straight from pole to pole; its Ascendant and Descendant curve across the latitudes.

  3. III

Look for cities, not exact points

Astrologers usually treat a line as a band a few hundred kilometres wide, strongest close in. We list cities of 100,000 people or more within 300 km.

  4. IV

Ask how it matched your experience

The most useful reading is personal: if you have lived or travelled near a line, compare what you remember with what the planet is said to symbolise.

How we calculate it

Planet positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library: apparent geocentric right ascension and declination for your birth minute, measured against Greenwich apparent sidereal time. A planet's Midheaven line runs along the longitude where its right ascension matches local sidereal time; its rising and setting lines solve the horizon equation at each latitude from 66°S to 66°N. Coastlines are Natural Earth's 1:110m land data, and nearby places come from a database of cities with 100,000 or more people. Read the full methodology.

Questions people ask

Astrocartography, plainly answered.

What is astrocartography?

Astrocartography, sometimes called astro-cartography or astrolocality astrology, maps your birth chart onto the globe. At the moment you were born each planet was rising, setting, culminating or anti-culminating somewhere on Earth. Joining those places gives four lines per planet, and astrologers read each line as a place where that planet's themes feel louder.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes. The Earth turns about one degree every four minutes, so the whole map shifts east or west with the clock. A time that is off by half an hour moves every line by roughly seven and a half degrees of longitude, which can be several hundred kilometres. If your time is a guess, treat the lines as approximate.

How close to a line do I need to be?

There is no agreed cut-off. Many astrologers use a few hundred kilometres either side, with the effect said to be strongest within the first hundred or so. This calculator lists large cities within 300 km of each line and shows the distance, so you can apply your own orb.

Should I move to a city on my Venus or Jupiter line?

We would not make a move on a map line alone. Work, people, cost and language matter far more to how a place treats you. Astrocartography is better used as a reflective lens: a way to ask why a city felt the way it did, or what you might want from the next one.

Why do the Ascendant and Descendant lines curve?

The Midheaven and IC depend only on longitude, so they are straight north to south. Rising and setting also depend on latitude, because the horizon tilts as you travel toward the poles. Close to the polar circles some planets never rise or set at all on that day, which is why the curves stop short of the map's edges.

Is this the same in Vedic astrology?

The lines are the same. They come from where the planets really were in the sky relative to the horizon and meridian, not from zodiac signs, so tropical and sidereal astrologers draw identical maps.

How is this different from a relocated chart?

A relocated chart recasts your whole birth chart for a new city, changing the houses and angles. Astrocartography shows only the places where a planet sits exactly on an angle. The two are complementary; the map is the quicker overview.

Is my birth data saved?

No. Your birth details are sent once to calculate the lines and nearby cities, and nothing is stored.
